Money: The currency used in Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR). Well known currencies such as US dollars, Euro and Great Britain Pound in cash or travellers cheques can be exchanged within the island. Major credit cards such as Diners Club, Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. There are ATM facilities can be widely found.

Transport: Mauritius has an extensive and a comparably reliable and safe public transport system. Bus transport is subsidised for foreign students.

Health Services: High standard health care services are provided in public hospitals and health centres across the island at low cost. Alternatively there are also many private clinics of international quality.

Communications: Communication facilities such as telephone, fax, Internet, telegram, mobile phones and post are widely available throughout Mauritius. Public telephone booths can be found easily and phone cards come in handy and can be purchased easily. Roaming contracts also exist with operators of various countries. Internet facilities are available. Postal services are efficient. International channels are available on TV and newspapers are published in French, English and Chinese.

Part Time Work
Employment of foreign national students in Mauritius for a maximum of Twenty hours (20 Hrs) Per Week

• The Employment (Non-Citizens) (Restriction) Exemptions (Amendment) Regulations 2011 provides for foreign students studying with registered tertiary education institutions in Mauritius and working part-time up to a maximum of twenty hours per week to be exempted from the requirements of Work Permit.

Understanding the Education System

Primary Education
The Mauritian education system is based on the British model and has remained a priority since independence. It is also free in principle at state institutions. Children enter primary school at age 5, where they study for 6 years towards their certificate of primary education in languages that include English, French, Geography, History, Mathematics and Science.

Secondary Education
The 6-years of secondary schooling adhere to the British model too. After the first 4 of these, students write their O-Levels in at least 6 subjects. If they wish to, they may remain on for the final 2 years, in preparation for the A-Level examinations administered by the University of Cambridge.

Vocational Education
The industrial training board is an ISO9001-Certified para-statal that provides training, consulting and train-the-trainer services throughout Mauritius. It exists to enhance the island nation’s skill base.

Tertiary Education
There are a number of tertiary institutions on Mauritius, including institutes of education, and of traditional studies. Other facilities include distance learning centers and polytechnics.

The most venerable of all is the University of Mauritius founded in 1965 and depicted here. It has undergone rapid expansion recently, and now boasts faculties of agriculture, engineering, law & management, science, and social sciences & humanities. There are also centers for distance education, medical research & studies, information systems & technology, and consulting services

Academic Calendar

The school year consists of thirty nine weeks, divided into 3 terms of thirteen weeks.[6] For Secondary schools 1st Term is from 12 January to 06 April, 2nd Term from 23 April to 20 July and 3rd Term from 13 August to 01 November. For Primary schools the 1st Term is from 12 January to 06 April, 2nd Term from 23 April to 20 July and 3rd Term from 20 August to 09 November.
